ROXANNA CROSS

Erotic romance you can really bite into!

Book Review: Bewitching The Vampire by Carrie Pulkinen

Rating: 2 out of 5.

The 71-page short story is a fast read. Cassie McClain, a witch who is tired of hiding her powers even though exposing her magic could put her life in peril, and Branan Sinclair, a vampire who despises witches, are introduced as the main characters.

Pulkien’s voice and style have a very YA vibe; even problems such as school horror stories, shaming, bullying, and hate groups adapted to the storyline so humans might join and hunt the supernatural. The fact that the main characters fall in insta love would likely appeal to teens and young adults. However, the clumsy, explicit content removes this book from the teens and young adult spectrum.

Perhaps it’s the shortness of the piece, Pulkein’s younger tone, or the fast-paced action that makes it feel like the characters never really take life; they aren’t fleshed out enough for readers to truly connect with them.

Although the story is cute, Pulkien doesn’t provide many descriptive details about the surroundings, which prevents readers from being transported there to share the experience. The ending includes a sweet revelation from Branan to Cassie, and it’s about the only fresh twist this story had to offer and the reason why this book became a 2-star read instead of 1.
