Is it typical of the writer in me to say English Lit?
Reading and writing essays on books, plays, short stories, and poems was so much fun.
Shakespeare, Austen, Montgomery, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Twain, Wilde, Yeats, and so many other authors discovered and new loves found.
English Lit provided an escape from reality into worlds like the ones Tolkein built. In this class, we could join Melville for the whale hunt or explore life in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution, just as Dickens did.
Reading in class without repercussions from the teacher or the dreaded warning of being sent to the principal’s office for being caught with a book again instead of focusing on the class material. It is not a problem in English Lit because the assignment is reading and writing.
No wonder I loved that subject.
