ROXANNA CROSS

Erotic romance you can really bite into!

Book review: Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmon Rostand

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This immortal play displays chivalry, wit, love, bravery, and timeless spirit with the fluidity of lyrical language, bringing our hero to life heartbreakingly. Cyrano is the legendary swordsman of France, a gallant soldier with the face of a clown and a huge nose. Yet his funny, adventurous tales span generations.

Rostand created a character with universal appeal that doesn’t put on airs; there are no pretenses with Cyrano; readers root for him because they also hope to attain the kind of love that Rostand portrays. Who wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of such poetry? It’s heartbreakingly beautiful the depth of his soul. Cyrano can make readers cry, laugh, and smile satisfactorily and yearn with his poignant words, wit, and flourish. He’s as relatable today as he was when Rostand created him, which is quite a feat.

Roxanne, Cyrano’s cousin whom he’s loved secretly for years, is beautiful and witty but unfortunately shallow and in love with Baron Christian de Neuvillette. Her character is also quite relatable today. Due to his clownish appearance, Cyrano feels doomed to never be able to win his love’s heart, and he concocts a plan to write Roxanne beautiful poetry expressing all the ardent feelings he arbors for her, and Christian will deliver said love notes. This love story deserves its dues in being the most balanced, cleverly funny play in literature, showcasing raw emotions on every page.

This play is a pure delight and merits a 5-star read. I highly recommend it to all.
