First published in 2006 by Samhain Publishing, Banks’ novella Understood became available in audiobook format in 2013 by Blackstone Publishing. The audiobook is narrated by Elizabeth Livingston in smooth tones to match the female protagonist’s state of mind and switching to an infuriating, protective one for the male character.
In this spicy, explicit novella, Banks presents her audience with a complex couple: Ellie Matthews and Jake Turner. Ellie’s ex-husband is the hometown golden boy, and she’s the shrew for divorcing him, but if they only knew what went on behind closed doors. The constant fear and abuse she suffered at his hands until the night she ran to Jake for help. Jake struggles to overcome the guilt of falling in love with his friend’s wife. Distancing himself from Ellie seemed to be the best way to let them have their happily ever after. However, now he’s even guiltier because of the distance he put between himself and Ellie. He didn’t notice the monster she’s been living with and all the horror she endured. He’ll give her time to heal. As soon as she’s ready, he’ll be waiting to make her his.
Since Ellie’s abuse plays a vital role in the plotline, Banks could have explored it further by lengthening her story. Otherwise, the novella is well-written. The sex is explicit and effectively used to advance the characters’ development, such as Ellie’s healing journey and new beginnings.
Overall, it’s a 3-star read or listen.
