ROXANNA CROSS

Erotic romance you can really bite into!

Book Review: Overheard Unspoken #2, by Maya Banks

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

First published in 2007 by Samhain Publishing, Banks’ novella Overheard became available in audiobook format in 2013 by Blackstone Publishing. The audiobook narrated by Chandra Skyye brings each character’s emotions to life.

In this spicy, explicit novella, Banks presents her audience with a feisty protagonist fed up with her lackluster sex partners. Thinking no man alive will ever be able to satisfy her, Gracie Evans breaks up with her latest boyfriend two weeks before Valentine’s Day and confides to her best friend, Shelly, that she wants a man capable of fulfilling all her fantasies without judgment. When Luke Forsythe accidentally overhears Gracie and Shelly’s conversation, he believes he’s the right man for her and plans to prove it to Gracie anyway he can. Things heat up quickly between them, and as Valentine’s Day approaches, he wants to make all her fantasies come true, including the threesome she’s always wanted. Still, when the truth comes out about his overhearing her conversation with her friend, Gracie is hurt and humiliated and doesn’t think she can trust her friends anymore.

Banks’ creation of conflict due to the overheard conversation and Gracie’s overreaction to the situation felt childish, and the quick resolution of it after the overblown reaction didn’t ring as genuine. Felt like Banks wrapped things up in a neat bow rather than letting the genuine emotions run their course, making this a 2.5-star read or listen.
