Book Review: Jason Bourne #2 The Bourne Supremacy, by Robert Ludlum

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Time to reenter the shady world of Jason Bourne with the second book in the series, first published by Random House in 1986. The title is available on Amazon in hardcover, paperback, Kindle, and audiobook formats, as well as at your local library and through the Libby App.

Ludlum keeps the tension brewing in this psychological thriller by keeping his protagonist’s inner conflict at an all-time high. This whodunit spy adventure is a page-turner from start to finish. The book is well researched, showcasing a broken man, David Webb, and Jason Bourne, opposite sides of the same coin, who are both needed, one used by his country for his many abilities and strengths. The two well-developed individualities hold up the storyline as much today as when Ludlum wrote it.

In Ludlum’s world-building, the dialogue between the characters drives the plot forward with intelligent twists and turns, making the story more intimate. His thrilling, fast-paced, action-packed narrative of hunter versus hunted, with both sides alternating in this game of wits, war, and violence, is in keeping with the gritty and realistic vibe of Jason Bourne.

There’s definitely an improvement in the knowledge of weapons in this book, especially the details about pistols and machine pistols displayed throughout. Ludlum’s distinctive descriptive voice as Jason makes his way through the Far East is so vivid that it transports his audience into the moment, with Jason in the middle of the hustle and bustle of local life or in the heat of hand-to-hand combat. The use of garrote and explosives keeps the pressure on as they navigate the web of lies and impostors.

The unique elements of this novel drive the plot rather than explicitly stating where it’s headed, something Ludlum excels at. His relatable characters and lifelike descriptions draw readers in and keep them invested until the end, which makes this another 5-star read.
