ROXANNA CROSS

Erotic romance you can really bite into!

Book Review: Call Me Maybe by Cara Bastone

An Audible original published in 2020, Call Me Maybe is available on Amazon in audiobook, Kindle, and paperback formats. Bastone wrote the book with dual perspectives from the female and male main characters, so it’s nice that the audiobook reflects that with its choice of narrators: Luci Christian and Neil Hellegers.

The book has an easygoing vibe, thanks to Bastone’s open and witty writing style; readers find themselves going along for the ride and smiling at the ridiculous scenarios she paints. From the first to the last chapter, she has a way to captivate the audience. The introduction of the main characters, Vera and Cal, during a customer service call while driving in traffic, to kill the insufferable wait time, is funny mainly because of the interplay between the two.

Vera needs to get the website for her new business, Date in a Box, running without all the glitches, and Cal is apparently the person who can fix the mess it’s in. Next thing they both know, they’ve been on the line for hours, Vera’s car battery died, Cal sent a tow truck to her rescue, and insisted he stay on the phone with her until she makes it home safe, and they’ve exchanged private numbers. Day after day, the two text and DM each other, spending hours on the phone helping each other out of odd situations.

This 3-star, cute rom-com is a good way to unplug after a long day. If you’re looking for a clean, witty romantic read, this one is for you.
