Persephone “Percy” Fraser’s parents buy a cottage, not in the Muskokas like most Torontonians, instead they opt for a spot in Barry’s Bay. At thirteen, Percy doesn’t know what she’ll do for an entire summer until she sees the lake.

Fortune’s storytelling shifts between present-day Percy during a weekend and young Percy over the six summers she spends at the cottage, where she meets the Florek brothers next door. Charlie is the older brother, and Sam is her age. Percy and Sam become best friends, exchanging emails throughout the year until they meet again in the summer. He’s her first crush, but he doesn’t seem interested in her that way. Her friend Delilah convinces her to double date to get her mind off her summer boy.

Present-day Percy, now thirty, is back in Barry’s Bay for the first time in over a decade, ever since she made the biggest mistake of her life. When she gets Charlie’s call letting her know his mom passed away, she knows she has to go back. Even if it means being in Sam’s orbit once again.

It took six summers to fall in love, a moment of insecurity to fall apart, and a weekend to untangle it all. Fortune showcases the nostalgia of love, people, and choices that mark us forever. Her characters are genuine and easy to connect with. Some of their decisions felt immature, showing how insecurity, jealousy, and ulterior motives can lead you down a path you never meant to go. This makes it all the more bittersweet.

Every Summer After is a quick, nostalgic 3.5-star read, perfect for fans of Abby Jimenez and Emily Henry.
