Chaos is my life: migraine attacks, good days and bad days with med adjustment periods, and so on; therefore, comfort is essential in my house. I’m no expert, mind you, but through trial and error, I’ve figured out how to make my daily living a little less overwhelming by creating daily habits and rituals, if you will.
Using the same coffee mug in the morning, unless my daughter nabbed it from the cupboard, I ask Alexa to play my favorite station while I write or read. I have an afghan draped over the couch to wrap myself in if needed. Having my dog as my companion by my side brings me so much joy. This little guy, with his exuberance and playful nature, makes me smile; it’s impossible not to. I have Scentsy plug-in warmers all over the house, plugged in and ready to melt whatever wax I put into them, which helps me relax. The goal isn’t to conquer the day; no, it’s to do simple things to alleviate stress and increase comfort levels.
To help keep my migraine at a tolerable level, I use soft lighting or candles, apply ice packs or a magic bag to alternate between cold and hot, and rest a lot because otherwise, it can become unbearable. I’ve learned this the hard way. I hate resting. Makes me feel guilty to lie down and do nothing. Actually, I’m taking a breather for my health, a reset until my body is ready to move forward again. And these much-needed ‘break times’ are just as ritualized as my daily coffee, bringing me comfort in the end.
