She wonders what he’s hiding and if his version of the past is true now that she’s learning more about the Shadows, what they are, and how to walk through them.

Kate’s habit of withholding information leads Luce to constantly put herself in dangerous situations. Daniel’s brooding attitude is cold to the point of detachment toward Luce, and he’s supposed to be the love of her life across eternity. So why the cold shoulder? Luce’s naivete grates. With or without information, her lack of self-preservation is unfathomable.

Does Kate think feeding information in droplets or life-or-death moments chapter after chapter creates tension? Newsflash, it doesn’t. Mix that with a love story that rings untrue, and you get a 2-star read.
