ROXANNA CROSS

Fantasy Romance with Teeth Soul and Ruin

Book Review: Fallen #5, Unforgiven, by Lauren Kate

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Delacorte Press published the final Fallen series installment in November 2015. The book is available in multiple formats on Amazon, at libraries, and via the Libby app.

Kate laid the groundwork for this story in Rapture, where Cam approaches Gabby to ask about Lillith’s soul in Heaven. However, he’s shocked to learn that the love of his life is trapped in Hell.

Determined to save her, Cam makes a deal with the devil. He’s given two weeks to get Lillith to fall in love with him again; otherwise, both are doomed. Throughout this challenge, Lucifer repeatedly sabotages Cam, interfering with his progress, altering his appearance, and spreading harmful rumors.

Although the book is meant to focus on Cam, the narrative actually centers on Lillith: the girl he loved 3 eons ago and still loves, who now hates him but can’t remember why. Unfortunately, her inner monologues are dull, conversations are stilted, the action is monotonous even at the climax, and the story remains flat.

As a result, the lack of emotional investment makes it hard to connect to Lillith and her plight. The limited insight into Cam reveals him unraveling, but since the focus isn’t on him, any connection with his character is fleeting. This becomes frustrating because the audience never fully engages with what lies beneath the surface.

Ultimately, a promising book flopped, making this a 2-read.
