ROXANNA CROSS

Fantasy Romance with Teeth Soul and Ruin

Book Review: Fallen #3.5, Fallen in Love, by Lauren Kate

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Published in January 2012 by Delacorte Press, this short story collection is available in hardcover, paperback, Kindle, audiobook, at libraries, and through the Libby app. It offers readers glimpses of other characters in the Fallen series, revealing short love stories over time as they chase Luce.

For example, readers learn why Cam joined Satan after the love of his life rejected him before their wedding. Similarly, Roland hides behind the role of the school peddler, choosing this rather than risking the pain he felt with Rosaline by opening himself to love again. In another vignette, Kate reveals the story behind Arianne’s scar, earned from a love so fierce it burned. Meanwhile, in medieval England, Miles and Shelby’s budding romance comes to light. It is sweet and unexpected.

Even if Daniel and Luce aren’t front and center in these stories, their love is tangled up in everything. Some couples dream of going to the St-Valentine’s festival, while others already know heartbreak, but these stories all circle around Daniel and Luce in one way or another.

It’s a quick, easy 3-star read. Even if it doesn’t move the Fallen series forward, getting to know the characters in a different light is good development by Kate.
