Library Hold Strategy

Books stacked in a curved arc over a wooden desk with a tablet, calendar, and plant

I’ve already expressed how much I love libraries. I enjoy discovering new books and new authors, or cozying up with favorites.

That being said, I tend to fill my hold shelf until I try to place a new hold; the app then tells me I’ve maxed out, so I have two options: cancel the hold or remove a book from my shelf to add the new one.

I don’t want to cancel a hold I’ve waited weeks or even months for. So, I keep a list of books to add to my shelf. When a title becomes available, I add the next one from my list, so my on-hold books never seem to decrease. Am I the only one who does this?

If you’re an avid reader using the library app, do you find that when reading a series, it doesn’t matter if you add book 1 to your hold shelf; book 2 or even book 3 often becomes available before book 1?

This happened when I wanted to start Ali Hazelwood’s Not In Love series. My library app notified me that a book was ready to borrow. I borrowed and read it, then realized it was book 2. What about book 1? The app says I still have several months’ wait, while book 3 had a 3-week wait. For the first time, I removed a title from my on-hold shelf because I want to read book 1 before continuing the series.
